Hurley Australian Open of Surfing 2014

The Hurley Australian Open of Surfing has been back at Manly this week! It's been a sick week with good vibes and good atmosphere. Each morning before official competition starts, the competitors have been going for free surfs out at North Steyne in Manly. It's been great seeing them in their natural element, free of the comp pressures. Talking to some of the surfers, they seem to be relaxed and loving the Northern Beaches lifestyle!

Here are some shots I took on Thursday morning before competition started.

liquid mountain

This photo mystifies me. I am not really sure how I captured the angle of the wave that I have, but nonetheless, it's awesome. I'm very happy with this image! It was taken at Dee Why Beach on Sydney's Northern beaches and it's a really good desktop wallpaper haha.

dee-whizzle

This image is called 'dee-whizzle'. It was so satisfying when I was flicking through my picks from the morning when I came across this one. I knew I'd been in position and didn't know if the shot would come out like my real-life experience did - freakin off the chain!! When I saw that it had, I was so happy! This is Dee Why morning for you. Icy water, but a warm glow penetrating the lip.

yellow mirrors

This image is a new favourite. It was taken at Dee Why Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches and I absolutely love it. I was racing out to the water to get pitted and had to stop at the seaweed and glossy sand just to take some shots. The person standing there is my good mate and wave shooting buddy, Josh. Hope you all like it!

green glow

This image is called 'green glow', evidently because of the effect the morning sun has on the wave. This was shot down at Dee Why Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches. It is a favourite of mine as it really highlights the beauty that this particular morning entailed. The sun, so bright, shining through the lip; white at the top with a heavenly glow, then trickling down in to a rich green. The wave itself is far from glorious, yet the sun gives it a majestic radiance that cannot be overlooked. I hope you like this image and will check out the rest of my collection at facebook.com/SamJonesPhotography

Marquesas

This image was taken yesterday, a day when the South Narrabeen Shorebreak was working in overdrive. There were no really pretty shorebreaks, but more just walls and masses of water surging into the sand. This image got its name from the buildings next to the palm trees; Narrabeen's twin towers, "The Marquesas".

Lumous

This image was taken during a crazy morning at Dee Why Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The light shining through the back of the wave, illuminating the pitt, like it does, blows me away. It's not a pretty wave, or a perfect tube, it's just a mind-blowing natural effect.

This is an image taken when I went for an early down at Narrabeen, on the Northern beaches of Sydney. There was a phenomenal sunrise and I took so many photos. This one was on the highlight reel! Stoked to have captured such an incredible picture of creation!!

lone

This image was taken on a gloomy morning down at Narrabeen Beach, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. There was a really nice sunrise but I could only see a bit of it behind the thick-set clouds. This image is taken from where I was sitting, watching the sunrise, deciding if it was worth heading out into the water or not. The image is called "lone" and I like the serene feel of it.

mirror

This image was taken in a brief moment where the clouds parted at Curl Curl Beach on the Northern Beaches, Sydney Australia. It is called "mirror" for the obvious reason that it looks like a mirror.

shaka

This image was shot at Dee Why Beach on the Northern Beaches in Sydney Australia. The wave hit some backwash and splashed up just as I took the photo, and I think it resembles the shaka sign, or universal sign for 'hang-loose'. The image is called "shaka"
